Castle Combe: A Hidden Gem of the Southern Cotswolds
Nestled in the lush green valley of the River Bybrook, just 12 miles from Bath, Castle Combe is often hailed as one of the most beautiful villages in England. This picture-perfect spot on the southern edge of the Cotswolds is steeped in history, dating back to the 13th century when it thrived as a weaving town.
Built from the warm, honey-coloured Cotswold stone, the village is filled with charming old houses and cottages that line its quiet main street. With no access for large bus tours from London, Castle Combe remains peaceful and crowd-free—a true escape into the tranquillity of countryside life.
Stroll through the village at your own pace, visit the ancient St Andrew’s Church, and perhaps pick up some delicious homemade cakes or sweets sold by friendly locals right outside their homes. Whether you’re snapping postcard-worthy photos or soaking in the serene atmosphere, Castle Combe is an essential stop on any southern Cotswolds tour.

But who built it? Why was it constructed? And how were stones weighing up to 30 tons transported over 150 miles and aligned with astonishing precision to mark the solstices? Come share your theories and uncover what archaeologists have learned through decades of research. Stonehenge is a remarkable testament to ancient ingenuity—and it truly has to be seen to be believed.
